sweet and sour
While on the annual holiday this year camping at the beach we met some great people from western Queensland, out in the wild dry west where life works in completely different ways.
I love the people you meet in any form of camping, and the things you learn about how other people live that help put your own life in perspective. One such story was about a game this couple played with their kids while doing the long drives from the country. I am sure many can relate to numberplate games including ‘the alphabet’ and ‘cricket’, even ‘I-spy’ until there is nothing left to spy, however this game was very simple.
It was called Sweet or Sour. It works like this. When a car goes past you wave, if they wave back they are a ‘Sweet’ if not they are a ‘Sour’. Simple enough. Of course you count the Sweets and Sours and somehow it all comes together that someone wins.
More importantly than the simple game was the underlying theme to it. That country folk wave back as it is the way, while ‘townies’ don’t.
It made me reflect on what I would do and even more what else does it say about us all.
Maybe if we all waved a little more day to day in our interactions be they business or leisure perhaps our experiences might change a little. It was one of those things I got to mull over in the tent while taking time out from the business.
Next road trip we take I am going to learn to wave more!
