Choosing the right tool for the job, gardens or web tech, it saves in the end.
My camping holiday is over again. I came back to my semi rural property overgrown and messy. My ride-on mower had gone to God; it was hot and didn’t look like I was in for much fun at all.
Several options ran through my head:
- Can I force this old mower to start and do a rough job for now?
- Just get a hand mower and do the front for now and bluff neighbours (and wife) that it looks good.
- Leave it and go play on the PS3.
None of these was going to help.
In the end, I spent several thousand dollars and bought a new ride-on mower with some specific attachments for my type of property (including an awesome tipping trailer), a new blower vac and a small hand mower. You can see why Wife doesn’t let me go to the tool shop often.
So what was the result? Well I spent my first weekend at home working hard, very hard. And with my newish Whipper Snipper (Line trimmer for Americans) which was also a high-grade expensive unit, I did the work in about half the time, or less, than it used to take me.
Why? Because with a little experience and asking some pertinent questions, but mainly listening to what was advised to me, and asking more questions from that until I understood my needs correctly, I purchased items that were right for the job.
Yes, I spent money, but ultimately I used to spend more, and get increasingly frustrated when cheap units don’t start, cut out or just don’t have the muscle for the job in hand.
None of my purchases is the prettiest looking or the latest fad equipment, in fact I am sure the technology hasn’t changed that much in recent times. However, they work, and when I chopped and changed between items they fired up and I powered through my work.
My wife was so happy with how much time I saved I was quickly dispatched to wash 3 cars before it got dark – but that is another story!
So what about Web technology?
Well it is pretty much the same.
You need to ask questions (we can’t all know everything about everything). You need to hear the answers and ask more until you are satisfied the person answering knows what they are talking about and are not just selling you something.
You can’t just have a glossy front with the back an entire mess, and you must spend what is necessary to get the right tools for the job. In most cases what you need to spend is time;
- Time to work out your needs.
- Time to brief the process correctly.
- And time to save a few more dollars if what you need is out of your budget.
Rest assured though if you get the right tools for the job you will enjoy the many benefits of using web technology for some of the potential it offers.
Sounds simple doesn’t it? Well in theory, it should be – but there are still many people just not using web technology correctly because they haven’t invested correctly in it or chosen the right tools for the job. And just because your mate has all the theories it doesn’t mean his tools will work for you. The tools for a small suburban plot won’t cut it on my property (excuse the pun).
It can be a jungle out there, but with the right tools, you can have a bowling green in no time flat!
