Converging Technology with Queensland Business Leaders

Filed under: Business, Web 2.0, ireckon — darryl @ 11:59 pm

I was a guest today at the official launch of the 2008/09 Queensland Leaders Program. This program is now in its second year and by all accounts has been a huge success for the participants.

In short the program supports 15 individual companies based in Qld to assist them access mentoring, capital and training to enable them to become best of breed international corporations, enhancing the business future of Queensland.

From their site- Vision:

  1. Build the head office infrastructure and networks in Queensland
  2. Generate economic and employment opportunities at senior management level
  3. Further develop industry sectors around key organisations
  4. Further develop and diversify the Queensland State economy
  5. Increase local management skills and connectivity
  6. Increase business investment into the State
  7. Harness the strength & resources of our business leaders

The luncheon was addressed by the State Treasurer Andrew Fraser, and industry speakers. Notably Richard Suhr, Enterprise Lead at Google Australia & New Zealand, discussed the modern technology that matters (from a Google perspective anyway).

when it all goes horribly wrong

What happens when the web goes horribly wrong.

Well a classic example is a marketing campaign run by Virginblue Velocity Rewards.

I received my points statement and a well hyped campaign to play an online game and go into win up to $70k in prizes.

Velocity offer

So of course what did i do. I went on to play it. I love the web and how easy it is to enter competitions!

So i did.

Web 2.0 hype and a reality check for your web site

Filed under: Business, Web Design and Development, ireckon — darryl @ 12:30 pm

The current online buzz words we all hear are Web 2.0. There is a lot of mixed messaging about 2.0 and what does it really mean. I was reading a good article about the hype / push to 2.0 everything out around the market (Social Media and Web 2.0 - Jason Burby).

The new drive behind 2.0 has a bit of a familiar ring to the year 2000 hype surrounding the web changing the world (shortly before meltdown occurred), although don’t get me wrong I love some of the great new ways the web technology can now be used.

What I like about this article is it mirrors sentiments I often express to our customers about any part of their web development (or any development on or off line), which is create / find the reason first then look at the development.

Whether it be for a Web 2.0 tool set or application, looking at interacting with social networking sites, or even something as simple as a sign up to a newsletter box on a web site, first have a reason and then plan how to deliver on it.

Search Engine Rankings - Long term results

Filed under: Business, Search Engine Optimisation, ireckon — darryl @ 12:12 am

We regularly get asked for some magic bullet or quick fix to get to the top of Search Engine results.

For many sites we see there is a bit of a quick fix, just getting the basics done right, or near right (if you want to stay away from the engines radar for being too perfect), but most of the site owners wanting the magic bullet are in tough categories.

I have been involved with SEO since before Google dropped on our radars, and for the large part now the basics are the areas that generate the best results. And no I am not suggesting that doing the basics will get a result for every site in every category, however in the long run (which most businesses are in for) the fundamentals matter.

Think of it a bit like a football team / game of football (ok lets use Rugby Union as our football analogy for now). This year in the Super 14 we are seeing a lot of new experimental laws.(hmm this sounds a little like some of the latest google changes).

Keeping fit with SEO and maintaining your rankings

Filed under: Search Engine Optimisation, ireckon — darryl @ 3:52 pm

OK so doing SEO won’t lose you any pounds but I really like this article and the association between maintaining your health and fitness and maintaining your SEO rankings.

This issue comes up for us a lot when we explain why we provide ranking and update services as a monthly service.

As those of us who might have gone to the trouble to lose weight and get fit realise you cannot rest on your laurels and as soon as you get slack with it the sloppy bits return.

Have a read there is a lot of wisdom in these words, in relation to making sure you keep your eye on the ball and don’t just try 1 hit goes at SEO.
