we really do eat dog food now!

Filed under: Business, Misc., eat your own dog food, ireckon — darryl @ 7:12 pm

This week has seen our ireckon team run further with my ‘eat your own dog food’ belief. we now own the domain! www.eatyourowndogfood.com.au which is now a fully fledged recruitment site for the ireckon web design culture.

What i love about online is you can start a concept and in such a short space of time build something that would take years off line without tens of people. One of our dog food eaters and a bloody good designer for web Michael was intimately involved in taking this concept through to what it is.

Emily who saves me daily and others all pitched in with ideas and extensions of the theme. But more importantly they did something they got into and created a great expression of it.

Our team try to do this every day they come into the playground and it is just fun to be part of.

Go have a look and learn more about it! You can see all the crew and find out a little bit more about our creative side.

We are hoping it will attract the people we want. It might be a tight market but we still have values and a goal, and we decided warm pulses don’t count - only top dogs or puppies who want to become top dogs are needed here!

As my mother always told me, it’s the little things that count!

How often do we hear phrases / cliches like this and not give it another thought? Lots. Most people have statements like this brush off them without any consideration of the origins of such statements.

I have been in hospital recently having a full on leg operation which has left me on crutches for 6 weeks which as those who know me (yes the one with some form of hyperactivity) this has been a real patience tester. While in hospital, under Private hospital cover, we have an expectation that this in itself will be somewhat akin to 5 star hotel service. And while the Brisbane Mater Private is a nice modern hospital it suffers as do all health care organisations (or many) from accounting disease.

Accounting disease is where numbers rule the business. I have seen it too many times. A business beholden to the financial statements and processes that make good looking numbers. I know a time not so long ago when the main driver behind the Mater and similar hospitals was their beliefs and desire to provide first class patient care. I have a little more insight to this particular hospital as my partner was a long term nurse there through both regimes. The regime where the nuns and their belief in care over ran the current methodologies of everything about the numbers.

Terminal Chaos aka human collaboration at its worst

Filed under: Business Travel, Misc. — darryl @ 5:37 pm

Been traveling again this week. And it always amazes me when you are waiting for your bags how crazy we all are and completely self interested, which ultimately leads to the most inefficient system I have seen.

Basically the turntable of bags is getting ready to roll the bags around and everyone pushes right up to it to try and get to their bag.
Facts: There is not enough room for everyone to get in the front. Bags come out randomly and don’t care if you are pushed to the front. People not at the front push in front of people leaving room to let others through to get their bags and block that route.

Of course there are probably a number of psychological theories about this which are probably very relevant. To me it just smacks of the me first type mentality that shows up in our current society from time to time. That in itself is not so bad people do have to look after their own interests, but in instances like this the process offers no benefits to anyone.

Solution: Yellow line 1 metre back from turntable (like US international ones), and half a dozen corridors so people seeing their bag coming can walk in get it and walk out. Hmm we could do this ourselves if we could just naturally find a way to collaborate on it without people having to have a “hughsie loses it” moment. I guess though that is why the Americans paint the lines - they figured out we won’t do it on our own so we need to be herded, despite the best intentions of positive thoughts.

Me i would just like to be able to get to my bag on its turn around the table without a squeeze-fest. Much easier to carry it on the plane i guess.
